Gilbert: 'We were really on top and Oldham weren’t really threatening us'
Shrimpers left-back Peter Gilbert picked up the S24 MOM award during the 1-0 defeat to Oldham Athletic in the cup second round replay at Boundary Park Tuesday evening, poor consolation as it's the game he wanted to win, and to have got that chance to pit his wits against the best Premiership Liverpool could have thrown at him.
Gilbert told http://www.echo-news.co.uk: “I’m absolutely devastated about losing because we were the better team but we need to use this anger and take that in to trying to win the league. We need to make sure we react in the right way too because we have a very important match against Bradford on Friday. A trip to Anfield was a once in a lifetime opportunity and it might be the last one a few of us have of getting to play there. If we had kept 11 men on the pitch then I definitely think we would’ve won the game. We were really on top and Oldham weren’t really threatening us. But when we went down to 10 men it changed and it made it much tougher for us because we couldn’t get enough players forward.”
Ahh, Bilel's sending off, wonder when we'd get round to that.
However, Gilbert didn't have much to add on to what he was quoted on after the game, after all it's history now, though Bilel had a go on his facebook page about the defender not shaking his hand in the tunnell after the final whistle, crikey what did he expect?
It's three points against struggling Bradford City under the lights of Roots Hall tomorrow that matters most now, and Mohsni can't play anyway, in fact he will not be available until AFC Wimbledon away on New Year's Eve, unless the club hand out a further punishment!
He said: “I don’t really want to talk about it but everyone knows what’s happened and I guess we do feel let down because there was such a big prize at stake. We were on top and it’s just so frustrating. I’d also like to say sorry to the fans because for so many of them to travel up to Oldham was fantastic. It’s an expensive time of year and we definitely appreciate the support they’ve shown us. Hopefully they can be right behind us again tomorrow and we can get back on track.”
We could certainly do with a return to winning ways as soon as possible, let's hope it's on Friday.
