Holdsworth: 'You have these moments in football when you can't quite believe what is going on'

As darkness decended on the EEB Stadium Boxing Day afternoon, it was obvious the game couldn't go on as two sets of floodlights refused to remain working! Aldershot Town boss Dean Holdsworth had his say on that, and referee Ward!

Holdsworth: 'For the penalty Ben Herd didn't raise his hands'   Though probably pleased that with his side one down and with only ten men to come out and face the Shrimpers in the second half, Shots boss Dean Holdsworth still took the opportunity after the match was called off to have a go at match official Gavin Ward, and in honesty who can blame him.   Holdsworth told www.theshots.co.uk: "You look at it in bafflement. You have these moments in football when you can't quite believe what is going on. It is a shame because I was looking forward to it. It wasn't a niggly game at all. For the penalty Ben Herd didn't raise his hands. You are told that if the player has his hands raised and the ball hits them it is a penalty.  For Jermaine (McGlashan) he went past a player and there was contact in the box and he got booked for diving. A minute later exactly the same incident just out side the box saw a foul given. What are we searching for?"   However, the former Wimbledon legend was confident his side could have turned it around after the break, then again he would say that.   Holdsworth said: "Even when we had Darren (Jones) sent off we could have thought the world was against us at the time but the players at half time had the belief that they could get something from the match which showed the confidence they had."   Maybe, but I think the bookies would have been offering short odds on a Southend win.   Anyway, it's all history now as Shots and Shrimpers will face each other again, hopefully before we play them at Roots Hall on Tesday, march 20th.   Holdsworth concluded: "We were aware of the floodlighting problem during the first half. There was constant communication between the Fourth Official and the Safety Officer and it wasn't to be. We will have to do it all again now. We haven't lost any points from this encounter although the bans will still stand which is disappointing."   Indeed it is for us as well, both Peter Gilbert and  Bilel Mohsni will be unavailable for the New Year's Eve clash at AFC Wimbledon.   Match Gallery: www.southendunited.co.uk    Bilel vote continues: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk    S24 is looking to build up it's editorial team, why not join us at the Shrimpers fastest growing unofficial site with up to and over 2,000 hits a day currently this month?   If you have something to say on the present exciting times at Southend United or an idea for a new poll, then click on the link with your article or contact details and we will get in touch, just a few lines will do: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk
