Gilbert: 'We're all gutted after the draw against Bristol Rovers, it actually felt like a defeat'

Southend United full-back Peter Gilbert talks about playing a former club in Oldham Athletic, keeping up our promotion push, and some lucky socks!

Gilbert: 'Oldham are a league above us, so we obviously know we’re in for a tough afternoon'   Shrimpers left-back Peter Gilbert turned out half-a-dozen times for the Latics a couple of years ago, but will do all he can to help keep up the Shrimpers incredible unbeaten run, now standing at 16 games, where one more will equal a club record.

And he will hope to do it by continuing his superstition of playing in ripped socks!   Gilbert told www.echo-news.co.uk: “It all started off because the socks were too small for my calves and I had to cut a slight hole in the top of them to ease the pressure on my legs. To begin with I was getting a new pair each week and was cutting holes in them without really thinking too much about it. But because we’ve been doing well it’s become a bit of a superstition for me. I now look for the socks with the holes already in them before each game we play and I’ll certainly be doing the same on Saturday.”

The former Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday defender, wonder if Luggy had something to do with those signings, just a guess, has been in storming form over the last few weeks, being picked three times in his position for the League Two Team of the Week

Gilbert said: “Oldham are a league above us, so we obviously know we’re in for a tough afternoon. The cups have been a nice distraction for us this season so far, so we want to try and keep the run we’re on going to get in to the third round. The dream would be to then play a top Premier League club away but there’s a lot of hard work to be done before we can even start to think about that."

However, whatever happens at the weekend and next Tuesday against Swindon in the JPT, Gilbert knows that points the following week against Cheltenham is No.1 in everybody's mind connected with the league leaders.   He concluded:"The league remains our priority this season and we can’t lose sight of that. We were all so gutted after the draw against Bristol Rovers last Saturday that it actually felt like a defeat."

Good to see the players have that attitude, as Luggy says, it's going to be a tough old week for them.
