Crewe Alexandra: After a rush to make sure he got to the ground in time for the JPT win at Dagenham & Redbridge, Southend United defender Peter Gilbert is taking no chances for the weekend trip to Crewe Alexandra!

Gilbert: 'It’s been a collective effort from the whole team to get the five wins'   Shrimpers left-back Peter Gilbert is in great form, since he's returned to the side after replacing Luke Prosser following the 2-0 defeat at swindon, the former Northampton defender has been involved in five successive wins and his side sit proudly at the top of League Two.   However, he's not had the best of luck at Gresty Road, having never been involved in a win against Crewe Alexandra, who Southend visit this saturday to try and continue their great run.

Gilbert told www.echo-news.co.uk: “I’ve never got a win at Crewe before and I don’t think I’ve got any fond memories from playing there either, so it would be nice for that to change this weekend. They have an unusual way of playing which makes them hard to play against and they often overpass the ball at times in areas you wouldn’t expect them to. They try and wear down their opponents and that’s something we will have to be wary of. But we’re going there full of confidence and believe we can get another good result.”

Peter's not only been in an unbetean side since early September but he's been selected twice in a row for the npower League Two Team of the Week, enjoy it while you can!

Gilbert said: “It’s the way things go in football sometimes and it’s been nice but I’m only a small part of the team. It’s been a collective effort from the whole team to get the five wins and now we want to keep that run going.”

The one blemish on his recent terrific run is that he nearly missed the 3-1 JPT win at the Daggers Tuesday evening, as Gilbert and midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala were stuck in traffic due to a fatal car accident on the A13 where a van driver lost his life going into the back of a truck!

Gilbert explained: “We were driving from Southend to Thurrock to meet the team coach but got stuck in traffic and had to go straight to the ground, which took us three hours. We didn’t arrive until about 10 minutes before kick-off and that was with JP being a rally driver! We were worried we wouldn’t make kick-off at one point and then we concerned we wouldn’t be in the team. I was making so many phone calls the battery on my phone died, so it was a nightmare. We got there in the end though, rushed through our warm-up and thankfully it all worked out OK. But I’ll definitely be going up on the coach for the Crewe game!”
