Game of two halves for Sturrock

Southend manager Paul Sturrock has called for his players to wise up and perform to their ability over 90 minutes week in, week out after watching them go down 1-0 at Bury. Joe Skarz was the matchwinner for the high-flying Shakers, heading home Steven Schumacher's free-kick shortly before the break to inflict Southend`s third successive defeat. Shrimpers keeper Glen Morris had earlier saved Ryan Lowe's spot-kick, but it was the visitors who posed the greater threat after the restart as Barry Corr, Josh Simpson and Michael Timlin all went close. Sturrock said: "There's the old clichi of a game of two halves. I'm bitterly disappointed we didn't get anything out of the game. We got out of jail coming in at half-time 1-0 down but second half it was like flicking a light switch. People wanted the ball all over the pitch and there was a will to win. "There's a naivety in this team. Individually there is a naivety and it's manifesting itself team-wise as well now. Last week we produced our worst performance of the season (losing 2-0 at home to Crewe) but this week we've come to a very good side and been competitive over the 90 minutes. "It's a huge disappointment. To look at that performance in the first half and then in the second half - it's the same people but a different team."
