New Southend United captain Craig Easton is confident the team can fight for promotion from League One even with all the financial problems still surrounding the club. Craig Easton: 'A popular player with former club Swindon, central midfielder Craig Easton choose to join the Paul Sturrock revolution at Roots Hall instead of signing a new one-year contract with the League One club, and he's confident he made the right decision.Easton was speaking to Blues Insider: "I came down to see the place and met a few people at the club who were all very positive about what is going to happen here. Coming to work for the gaffer was one of the reasons that I came to Southend as we have worked together twice before. I know what he is all about and his record speaks for itself with regards to promotions and hopefully Southend can achieve that this season. Yes there have been a few problems but I am here to play football and I think this is a great club to do it at."Easton put in another workman like performance against Derby County in the heart of the Southend midfield as he got another 90 minutes under his belt.Southend did fall behind to an early Rob Hulse goal but Matt Paterson's 62nd minute penalty sealed a credible 1-1 draw against the Championship outfit."The first half was more difficult and they probably had the better chances but we showed some good movement and limited their chances. In the second half I felt we could have gone on and won the match as we probably had the better chances to score. A lot of the boys are now getting 90 minutes under their belts. With the squad still taking shape people are probably getting a bit more game time than they might otherwise have got. But that is good as it is getting us sharp for the season and use to 90 minutes."With the arrival of eight new faces since Sturrock took charge just over two weeks ago, and more planned, some might have expected it to have taken a while for the side to settle down. But Easton admits that although remembering each others names was a problem to start with, the team is already forming a good understanding."We might have only trained as a squad three or four times but I think everyone who came to the Derby game will have seen that we are already gelling. It was a better performance than Friday night at Dartford and we have picked up a decent result. I think everyone can see that we are working hard for each other and getting to know each other. This is a good squad and a nice bunch of boys."For the full interview, go here:http://kappa.ecommzone.com/lz/SUFC/004FV7/06554127c9282a4e505b8f8caeee503490/story1.htm
