Ex-Captain Kev: 'Southend United will always be a special club for me'

Former Shrimpers skipper Kevin Maher is hoping to shake off his injury and face the Essex boys Saturday playing with his new club Dagenham & Redbridge.

Maher: 'In Ryan Hall, they have a very good player'

He's a Dagger now, after being a Gill, but in ex-captain Kev's heart he will always be a Shrimper, lifting the League Two play-off and League One Championship trophies aloft in his ten years with the club.

Midfielder Kevin Maher made 455 appearances for Southend but has missed weekend opponents Dagenham & Redbridge's last two matches with an ankle ligament injury.

He really wants to be fit for this one!

Maher told www.echo-news.co.uk: “I’d love to be able to play against Southend and hopefully I will be able to be involved in the game. I’m aiming to train again today and, touch wood, I’ll get through that OK because I really want to play. Southend will always be a special club for me and they’re bringing a lot of fans to the game so it would be nice to play in front of them again.”

He did paly in the Shrimpers 3-1 JPT win last month and is full of praise of what Blues boss Paul Sturrock has done for the club.

Maher continued: “When he first went in he hardly any players so he’s done a fantastic job. To go from that to where the club is now is brilliant and he seems to have built up a really strong squad too. Southend looked a good side when we played against them before and, in Ryan Hall, they have a very good player. But there are others who can hurt us as well who I obviously hope have an off day just this once when we play them this weekend.”

Anyway, he always gets a great reception from the Shrimpers faithful and Saturday will be no different, even if, sadly for most of us, Kevin left the club in not the best of circumstances, one of Tilly's errors while boss in our humble opinion.

Maher said: “I’m not really 100 per cent sure what happened myself if I’m honest. I’ve heard one or two things since I left but after being there for 10 years I was disappointed with how it was handled. But other than that my spell with Southend was brilliant and I have some great memories of being there.”

As we have of you Kev, let's hope we see those crab like passes at the Victoria Road stadium Saturday afternoon, hopefully not doing any damage!
