Essex boy eyes up return for Shrimpers after Spurs: 'It would be great to play for my local team'

Former Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Calum Butcher has placed on record he's up for signing a contract with his local club but warns them not to wait too long if they're interested! Culum Butcher; Born in Rochford, wonder if he's had a pint at the Anne Boleyn20-year-old defender Calum Butcher has turned out a couple of times for the Shrimpers seconds, and Blues boss Paul Sturrock was impressed enough enough to offer him a deal. Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk a couple of weeks ago: "Calum did very well. I'm thinking over what to do and taking advice from the likes of Graham Coughlan, who play in the same position as him." Fair enough, the veteran centre-half knows his stuff, and as reserve team coach has been closest to the action where the young Essex boy is concerned, but what has he passed on?Certainly Butcher himself is up for a deal, then again he is out of work at the moment so it's not surprising, and as he still lives in leigh, it would save the club coughing up for a room!"Butcher also spoke to the Echo: "It would be great to play for my local team. I think the club has the support and management structure to push for promotion next year and I would love to be a part of that. Also, with the new stadium planned for the near future, I predict great things for the club and hopefully I proved to the manager in the games I had that I can play and be an asset to them next year." It could mean the death knell for Luke Prosser's chances of a new contract, no news on young Luke at the moment, if Calum does put pen to paper, but if he's that promising let's get him on board. He had a start with both Ipswich and Southend youth sides before joining Premiership Spurs where he stayed for three years failing to play in the first team, but was on the bench when the North London club faced Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Cup in February 2009, a game that finished 1-1.Calum then went on loan to Barnet in the same year, where he made four appearances over the 2009/10 season.S24 predicted there could be some, er, legs in this lad staying a Shrimper back before his first trail earlier last month and wouldn't mind seeing the lad given a chance.Meanwhile, Calum is canny enough to post a warning to the management to get a move on.Butcher said: "At present I do have several clubs interested. But I just have to be patient and keep fit until such time that the right deal comes along."The Butcher FilesPersonal informationFull nameCalum James Butcher[1]Date of birth26 February 1991 (1991-02-26) (age 20)Place of birthRochford, Essex, EnglandHeight6 ft 2 in (1.88 m)Playing positionDefenderClub informationCurrent clubTottenham HotspurNumber41Youth careerIpswich TownSouthend United2007-2009Tottenham HotspurSenior career*YearsTeamApps†(Gls)†2009-Tottenham Hotspur0(0)2009→ Barnet (loan)3(0)* Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only and correct as of 12:58, 27 December 2009 (UTC).† Appearances (Goals).
