Defensive worries for Shrimoers

Southend boss Paul Sturrock is facing a defensive crisis for the trip to promotion-chasing Shrewsbury. The Shrimpers are desperately short of defensive options with five doubts for the clash. Chris Barker is out after suffering a setback in his recovery from a calf problem and Mark Phillips will rest a hernia in the hope that it clears up before surgery is required. Luke Prosser is awaiting the results of an X-ray to discover the damage to his foot, while Bilel Mohsni is suffering from "three or four injuries" and is doubtful. Graham Coughlan missed the defeats against Charlton and Macclesfield and the draw with Accrington but has resumed training following his groin injury. Sturrock told the club`s official website: "We`ve got a handful of injuries to try and get through. Hopefully some will come through." Ryan Hall could return to the starting line-up after recovering from a dead leg in time to play the last half an hour of the FA Cup first-round replay defeat to Macclesfield, and 15-year-old Lyle Della-Verde could be named on the bench again.
