Daniels in the Shrimpers den: 'Rather play first team footy then play in reserves at West Brom'

Southend United loanee goalkeeper Luke Daniels had a good start in Tuesday evening's 3-0 win at Barnet, and wants to keep that form over his month at the club as the Shrimpers continue their promotion

Daniels: 'There seems to be a good group of lads here'   The new Shrimpers shot stopper Luke Daniels wants to keep the Essex boys on the right track to promotion after joining the club on a 28-day emergency loan from West Brom that will see him cover for injured No.1 Glenn Morris.    Daniels told www.echo-news.co.uk: “It was nice to start with a clean sheet and a win, especially as the first game is always quite difficult when you come in. I only came down to train on Tuesday for the first time before the game. But I felt as though I was building more of an understanding with the defence the longer the game went on. Hopefully that can carry on and I can help the team to keep on doing well while I’m here.”   Young Luke signalled his transfer on Twitter of which he is a keen user, once joking he has 'had more loans than NatWest', obviously hasn't been in a bank recently, however, look at that career record over the last three yeras, he could write a UK travel guide!    Daniels said: “I’d rather come out and play first team football then play in the reserves at West Brom and I’m pleased to have come to Southend. The move all happened very quickly and I didn’t know anything about it until Sunday evening. I was back home in Manchester at the time and by the time I’d gone back to Birmingham everything had been pretty much sorted out. There seems to be a good group of lads here so I’m sure I’ll settle in quickly and I’m looking forward to the games."   After a shaky start, the missed penalty must have settled the nerves, he hadn't touched the ball up to that moment, and after that he went on to pull off a couple of decent saves, one of which is caught on the highlights, link below.   A missed spot-kick, a great save, a red card, and three goals, including 'that' one: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk   The Daniels Files     Personal information Full name Luke Matthew Daniels Date of birth 5 January 1988 (1988-01-05) (age 23) Place of birth Bolton, England Height 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m) Playing position Goalkeeper Club information Current club West Bromwich Albion Number 19 Youth career 1997–2004 Manchester United 2004–2006 West Bromwich Albion Senior career* Years Team Apps† (Gls)† 2003–2004 Manchester United 0 (0) 2004– West Bromwich Albion 0 (0) 2008 → Motherwell (loan) 2 (0) 2008–2009 → Shrewsbury Town (loan) 38 (0) 2009–2010 → Tranmere Rovers (loan) 37 (0) 2010 → Charlton Athletic (loan) 0 (0) 2010 → Rochdale (loan) 1 (0) 2011 → Bristol Rovers (loan) 9 (0) National team‡ 2006–2007 England U19 2 (0) * Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only and correct as of 22:42, 16 June 2011 (UTC).
