Striker Leon McKenzie has joined Southend's next opponents Northampton on loan, and his new boss Ian Sampson expects the former Coventry man to repay his judgement, quickly! A new Cobbler; though Leon has been doing the rounds The August transfer window may be closed closed, Sampson was able to sign McKenzie because he was an unattached player, and as of yesterday night clubs could also take players on loan. The Town manager informed the Chron earlier this week that he was confident of bolstering his forward line ahead of Saturday's npower League Two visit of Southend United. And that is a mission he has accomplished with the recruitment of 32-year-old former Norwich City and Coventry striker McKenzie, on a deal until the end of the current campaign.Sampson has been looking to add a striker to his squad since pre-season, and that search was stepped up substantially when the club lost Tadhg Purcell to a season-ending knee injury last week. The side has only scored once in open play in league football but the manager believes McKenzie, who played a key role in Norwich's first division title-winning team five years ago, has what it takes to improve on that record."I am pleased to have got Leon in. He is an experienced striker with a good goalscoring record playing at a higher level. We have been struggling for goals and Leon will come in to try and change that. We have been looking to add to the squad and Leon fits the bill. He has got an excellent CV and a good pedigree and he has a hunger to get back among the goals. We have been talking for a few days and he has been training with us and I am pleased we have got things sorted out. He is a player I have been looking at for a while and the cup run has allowed us to bring him in."
