Cheer up Peter Reid: 'When they got one in, it was always going to be a struggle'

Poor old Pilgrims manager Peter Reid as he saw his side break an unwanted club record and stay marooned at the bottom of the table after losing to Southend United 2-0 in south-east Essex Saturday. Reid: 'I think the red mist has come out but you've got to try and be disciplined'   Plymouth Argyle boss Peter Reid cut a disappointed figure in the autumn sunshine after seeing his side sink to an eighth successive league defeat, where he felt not grabbing the opening goal in a poor opening half where they held their own without ever testing Shrimpers keeper Glenn Morris.   Reid told www.pafc.co.uk: "We had a chat about that at half-time. You've got to get into those poitions and we didn't do it. I thought we were the better side first half. Some of our play was good, but we gave the ball away in certain areas too easily."   Then the spot-kick after the break that changfed the course of the game.   Reid explained: "The penalty was bad defending, and it's cost us. You've going to come under pressure in any game away from home but i thought we were handling it. When they got one in, it was always going to be a struggle. We are struggling  to score goals. As much as we huffed and puffed, it wasn't to be today."   And then a sending-off, Pilgrims skipper Carl Fletcher being sent off for handbags with Michael Timlin.   Reid continued: "It was our foul but a couple of our players got involved and the referee deemed it was Fletcher and that it deserved a red card. He's just apologised. I think the red mist has come out but you've got to try and be disciplined, and we lost it. Everybody's feelling it and there is a point when human beings can go."   However, for Reid, it goes back to once again to not being able to stop the opposition from scoring.   He said: "We've got to learn to defend better. Two dead balls again - it keeps happening. We switch off and we're getting punished. I'm watching the game waiting for it to happen the longer we don't score. Only we can get out of this For the second goal we're a man short but there's enough bodies to look around and pick up men. Communication. But we haven't done it. I don't like getting beat. it's difficult, but you've always got to keep going. We've got a home game coming up and we need to start picking up points, which we're doing at the moment."   Er, no your not, but it would be sad not to see league football down Plymouth way, but it's getting harder to see how they are going to get out of this even a few weeks before the clocks go back!
