Carling Cup First Round: Southend United v Leyton Orient

08 August 2011 22:54
Let's get a decent crowd down to Roots Hall Tuesday, August 9th; kick-off 19.45, to welcome our old friends from the East End. It's Shrimpers v O's in the opening round of the Football League's very own knock-out trophy. Carling Cup 1st Round: Welcome back to the O's, we've missed you!    v   SHRIMPERS   Blues boss Paul Sturrock will not risk Anthony Grant or Chris Barker for the Shrimpers Carling Cup clash against Leyton Orient at Roots Hall. As 24 reported on Saturday both midfielder Grant and centre-back skipper Barker both picked up what Sturrock described as "niggling knocks" during the opening-day 1-0 win over Hereford United last Saturday. With Bilel Mohsni looking as if he'll be given a rest, Peter Gilbert could come in at left-back to allow Luke Prosser or Graham Coughlan in at centre-back, while Ryan Leonard may get a debut at right-back.  Striker Liam Dickinson and midfielder Kane Ferdinand could well come into Luggy's thoughts, having enjoyed late cameos at the weekend due to a lack of match fitness. But 21-goal man from last season Barry Corr (knee) and son of Luggy Blair (ankle) will continue to miss out, as they could do for a while yet. As it's the League Cup Luggy will be able to name seven substitutes in the Carling Cup, but whatever team he puts out they should give our East End neighbours from League One a decent match. They are not in the best of health themselves. Possible Southend United: Morris, Leonard, Coughlan, Phillips, Gilbert, Hall, Kalala, Ferdinand, Johnson, Harris, Dickinson. Subs: Bentley, Clohessy, Prosser, Sawyer, Woodyard, Crawford, Asante.   COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!   So where will the Shrimpers finish this season? VOTE HERE: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk   OPPOSITION   Leon McSweeney has joined Leyton Orient's casualty list ahead of the trip to Southend. The midfielder, a summer signing from Hartlepool, suffered a knee injury on his debut against Walsall and faces three or four weeks on the sidelines. The Os were already without Stephen Dawson, Marc Laird, Jamie Jones, David Mooney and Terrell Forbes for Saturday's 1-0 defeat. Skipper Dawson has an ankle knock, fellow midfielder Laird is struggling with thigh trouble, goalkeeper Jones has a shoulder problem and striker Mooney a hamstring injury. All four are expected to miss out at Roots Hall but defender Forbes could be available after a stomach injury. On-loan Newcastle youngster Michael Richardson is eligible to play and looks set to go into the starting line-up. (From PA) Player to watch:   Alex Revell   One thing Alex is is a tryer and if gets picked Tuesday he'll work his socks off, as Tilly, a great admirer, he paid 150k to Brighton for him, would have said.   Whether he scores or not we will have to see.   Though he didn't leave in the best of circumstances for first, Swindon on loan, and then permanently for Wycombe Wanderers, after the club and the player parted company 'by mutual consent.'   Always given a good hand by the Roots Hall faithful, whatever revell thinks about the club, the former Braintree player holds no grudge against the Shrimpers support.    He told Echoman Chris Phillips: 'Southend fans helped me come back from one of the toughest times of my career and I'll never forget that. They were great with me."   Full info on Alex here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Revell   Another O who should see action is old nemisis from the Farmers striker Jamie Cureton who once grabbed a hat-trick against us at the Hall!    For more about him, if you must: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Cureton   Last Time Out   Walsall 1 Leyton Orient 0 (Saturday, August 6th): www.leytonorient.com   Manager Slade after the game: www.leytonorient.com   Top of League One 2010/11   #TeamPlWDLFAWDLFAWDLFAPtsGD 1 Brighton & Hove Albion 46 17 4 2 54 22 11 7 5 31 18 28 11 7 85 40 95 +45 2 Southampton 46 16 4 3 44 13 12 4 7 42 25 28 8 10 86 38 92 +48   3 Huddersfield Town 46 12 8 3 38 21 13 4 6 39 27 25 12 9 77 48 87 +29 4 Peterborough United 46 15 5 3 69 40 8 5 10 37 35 23 10 13 106 75 79 +31 5 Milton Keynes Dons 46 14 5 4 35 23 9 3 11 32 37 23 8 15 67 60 77 +7 6 Bournemouth 46 13 5 5 47 24 6 9 8 28 30 19 14 13 75 54 71 +21   7 Leyton Orient 46 12 6 5 37 25 7 7 9 34 37 19 13 14 71 62 70 +9 8 Exeter City 46 12 5 6 40 31 8 5 10 26 42 20 10 16 66 73 70 -7 9 Rochdale 46 9 8 6 36 30 9 6 8 27 25 18 14 14 63 55 68 +8 10 Colchester United 46 12 7 4 38 30 4 7 12 19 33 16 14 16 57 63 62 -6   PREVIOUSLY   37-38, time to draw level!   At Southend Utd. The team has had several name changes since, first as Eagle Cricket Club in 1886 then as Orient Football Club in 1888. The O's are the second-oldest league club in London behind Fulham, and the oldest London club playing in the Football League following Fulham's promotion to the Premier League. They played in the 2nd Division of the Southern Federation's League in 1904, joined the Football League in 1905 and are the 24th oldest club currently playing in the Football League. History books written on the club by its historian Neilson N Kaufman suggest that the choice of the name Orient came about at the behest of a player (Jack R Dearing) who was an employee of the Orient Shipping Company (later to be taken over by P&O). The club's name was changed again to Clapton Orient in 1898 to represent the area of London in which they played. However, some historians think the name Orient was simply chosen due to its oddity and has no connection to them being an East-End club. The name Leyton Orient was adopted following the conclusion of the Second World War. The club had moved to Leyton in 1937. A further rename back to simply Orient took place in 1966 after the Borough of Leyton (in Essex) was absorbed into the London Borough of Waltha Forest. That renaming followed a financial crisis (one of several to hit the club, and by no means the first or last) and restructuring of the company behind the club; this is remembered for a "pass the bucket" collection that took place at a special meeting of supporters in the East Stand, when complete closure was claimed to be a definite possibility. The club finally reverted to "Leyton Orient" in 1987, shortly after Tony Wood took over as chairman and at a time when a supporters' campaign was taking place in the Leyton Orientear fanzine to reinstate the Leyton part of the club's name.
