Butcher handed Shrimpers trial

Southend boss Paul Sturrock has taken former Tottenham defender Calum Butcher on trial. The 20-year-old centre-back, who came through the Shrimpers youth set-up before going on to join Ipswich and then Spurs, will train with the squad and play for the reserves against Watford on Monday night. Butcher failed to make a single appearance for Tottenham's first team despite being among the substitutes for the 1-1 UEFA Cup draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in February 2009, but made four appearances on loan at Barnet in the same season. He will be joined by former Rushden youngster George Artemi, who has been training with the club for the past few weeks. The 18-year-old has already played in the reserves 0-0 draw with Colchester and the youth team's last two fixtures.
