Burton Albion 3 Southend United 1: Full report to follow Blues boss Paul Sturrock made four changes to his last starting line-up sometime in the past when we played Stevenage with the surprise inclusion of 18-year-old Alex Woodyard making his debut. A happy Ricky Duncan there.Alex will join Craig Easton in the centre of midfield instead of the banned Anthony Grant. Defender Chris Barker returns after a six week absence with a calf injury and he is joined in central defence by Luke Prosser. When will Luggy learn, not that we had much choice! They replace the suspended Peter Gilbert and Bilel Mohsni while the final, and not unsurprising change comes upfront where top scorer Barry Corr pushes Oxford loanee Jack Midson back to the bench. Both teams started lively enough with QPR loanee celebrating staying a Shrimper for a further month by getting involved in the action from the start, fouling and getting cauught offside within seconds of each other! It was the home side who looked the more likely though and after 12 minutes Graham Coughlan was adjudged to have fouled James Collins in the box.The Burton striker stood up, dusted himself down, and missed. A let off for the Blues who were not able to take advantage of this early Christmas gift.Ex-Southend loanee Scott Malone was not showing much more than he did at Roots Hall, fouling Louie Soares early on, who also took some decent corners which nobody could take advantage of, while getting in a shot from the edge of the area that was easily blocked. Prosser was struggling and after a foul on Collins was floated into the box by Malone, he was grateful Coughlan was there to clear the Shrimper lines.Since the penalty miss it had been a quiet time for both keepers but that was to change on 37 minutes when Blues No.1 Glenn Morris was picking the ball out of the net when Jaques Maghoma was found unmarked by Russell Penn and found the middle of the goal from close range. This was followed by some lively pressure from the Maghoma who forced two saves from Morris.Inbetween the recalled Corr got a header in from another Soares corner but picked out well enough by Burton shhot stopper Adam Legzdins. So all might have been well if the Shrimpers could have kept it down to one at the break, yet that was not to be as another Malone free-kick found Luke Prosser (OG) who decided to head into his own net. A massive blow three minutes into stoppage time and seconds before the ref would have blown for half-time.Poor Alex Woodyard, nothing to do with him, but however he's been playing for the successful Under-18 side in the past, his strange selection by Luggy was right out of the Australian Cricket Board school of choosing a team. When Tilly gave O'Keefe his chance at Leeds he had been in and around the squad for a bit, on as a sub now and again, Alex has hardly been seen outside Boots and Laces.Anyway, the lad was substituted for Blair Sturrock as the teams came out for the second period and the move was justified almost immediatly as son of Luggy brought the Essex boys back into the game with the help of Ryan Hall, who had also come on for the disapointingJust before the goal Soares, more involved than he has been for a while, well the whole team was more involved than they had been for a while but you know what I mean with the annoying Louie, had a low drive blocked    Southend United: Morris, Clohessy, Coughlan, Prosser, Barker, Simpson, Woodyard, Easton, Soares, Corr, German. Subs: Evans, Ferdinand, Herd, Hall, Crawford, Midson, Sturrock.
