Brown want Preston tougher, Luggy just wants to win

More late quotes from the two managers involved in this afternoon's FA Cup First Round tie at Deepdale between North End and the Shrimpers.

Brown: 'It's not always about 50 consecutive passes and great chances'   Manager Phil Brown wants his Preston side to show some extra steel as they look to turn around a dismal run of league form.

North End host Southend in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday boosted by Tuesday's penalty shoot-out victory over Rochdale in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The northern section quarter-final triumph came on the back of eight npower League One games without a win and Brown felt the way his side ceded first-half dominance at Spotland and were left hanging on for a 1-1 draw at full-time shone a light on their struggles.

Brown said: "I don't think it's a case of buckling, I think it's a case of understanding what's required in certain situations in a game of football. It's not always about pretty football, it's not always about 50 consecutive passes and great chances, it's about the hard work and the regains - getting possession back for your team. We had 71 regains from the midfield three in the first half against Rochdale and it was half that in the second half. That's down to positional sense, it's anticipation, it's putting a foot in if necessary."

Sturrock: 'Preston are a strong side who will make things exceptionally tough for us'   Meanwhile, Blues boss Paul Sturrock has already spoken about his miserable record in cup competitions but hopes to change that Saturday as they take on one of the legendary names in football at their place, Preston North End.    Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk: "They're in the league above us so we're obviously underdogs but, at the same time, we want to keep this run we're on going for as long as we can and hope to cause an upset. It would also be nice to able to make at least the third round of this competition because that's when things really start to get interesting. I would love us to be able to play against a team like Manchester United, Arsenal, Newcastle or Tottenham because that would be a huge financial benefit to the football club. But there's a long way to go before we can even start to contemplate anything like that as Preston are a strong side who will make things exceptionally tough for us."    Should be a great occasion, hope it's a positive result for everybody travelling up the M6.   The S24 Preview: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk   Who is the best Shrimpers boss of the last 30 years?: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk   S24 is looking to build up it's editorial team, why not join us: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk
