Boss not rushing defender signing

The Shrimpers chief has been scouring the market for a new centre-half after Peter Clarke left for Huddersfield, but has so far been frustrated in his attempts. "There is no point in bringing someone in for the sake of it," he told Southend's official website. "We do need a new centre-back but we've spoken to one who we are still waiting to hear back from and there are a few others available too so we're certainly not worrying about the situation. "We want to make sure we get the right person and that can take time." Spanish trialist Martin Camano will not be that person, though, after his spell with the club was terminated.
