Benyon: 'My time at Swindon Town just never got going'

31 January 2012 10:05
Southend United striker Elliot Benyon had plenty of incentive to open his account for his new club in Tuesday evening's promotion clash with Swindon Town; Benyon's last team, the 'fox in the box' never really showed what he can do in front of goal.

Benyon: 'It does take a little while to get your fitness back but I’m getting there now'

One of the Blues boss Paul Sturrock's six January signings, striker Elliot Benyon is hoping to get his opening goal in a Blue shirt in what would be his fifth game for his new club, especially against one of his old ones!

Benyon told www.echo-news.co.uk: “My time at Swindon just never got going and I think I only played nine or 10 times for them so of course I’m keen to do well this evening. I can’t wait for the game and players, for whatever reason, are normally able to find a little bit more against their old teams. I certainly hope that’s the case with me because it’s a massive game and it would be the perfect time to get my first Southend goal.”

There has been some crtiticism about Elliot's early performances, that he's looked overweight, something the diminutive forward puts down to his lack of games before putting pen to paper at roots Hall.

Benyon said: “I hadn’t played a lot of football before coming to the club and it does take a little while to get your fitness back but I’m getting there now. It’s definitely coming along nicely and I’m getting sharper. I’ve had a couple of chances in the last couple of games and hopefully one will go in for me tonight.”

No arguments there, expect him to line-up with Liam Dickinson with Ryan Hall and Dave Martin wide in an exciting Shrimpers forward line.

Best of luck to all the lads, and wrap up warm people, it's gonna be cold out there!
