Before Dundee FC Sturrock explains 'Scumdee' joke: 'Was just a bit of footy banter'Dundee United

Plymouth Argyle. Southend United manager Paul Sturrock was a Dundee United legend back in the day but doesn't regret a comment he made about their bitter rivals a while back, a day before facing the Dark Blues in a pre-season friendly! Sturrock: 'I don’t think I will need to go to the game in disguise' Blues boss Paul Sturrock was with Dundee United as a player and manager over many years, scoring 174 times between 1974 and 1989 in 576 games on the pitch, and a couple of years in charge of the dark Blues between 1998 and 2000. So Luggy will be taking up a long standing rivalry once again with Scottish Division One Dundee this Saturday in the first of two games the Shrimpers will be playing over this Scottish weekend, the second will be against either hosts East Fife or Raith Rovers. Southend United play Dundee, Sat. July, 16th; kick-off 15.15. And after a 'joke' he made that referred to our friends on the north bank of the Firth of Tay as ‘Scumdee’ on the PA system after a friendly between Plymouth Argyle and Dundee United three years ago, Sturrock appreciates he might not get a ticker-tape welcome from the fans of the side that play at Dens Park.  Sturrock told www.southendunited.co.uk: “The Dundee fans and I go way back but when I said what I did it was just a joke and I didn’t mean anything by it. It was just a bit of footballing banter which I soon apologised for and it remains to be seen what kind of reaction I get if they bring a few fans down. I’m certainly expecting a little bit of stick and banter which is something everyone enjoys in this game but you just have to hope people don’t take it too far. I’m sure it will be fine though and I don’t think I will need to go to the game in disguise.” On the other hand any Tangerine scarfs seen at the Bayview Stadium will be firmly behind Luggy whose goals in 1983 meant that the Terrors are one of the very few teams, Fergurson's Aberdeen, er, anyone else, that have taken the Scottish title away from the Old Firm since, well, forever!
