Barrett blasts back: 'The lads worked their socks off in what were very difficult circumstances'

The Crystal Palace and present Leyton Orient loanee Adam Barrett has hit back at suggestions by Southend United chairman Ron Martin that the relegated team of last season were not trying hard enough! Barrett: 'I was captain and everyone knows how much Southend meant to me'Presently on loan at League One Leyton Orient, ex-Shrimpers skipper Adam Barrett is still hoping he'll get another season to prove his worth in the Championship with Crystal Palace, as long as they stay up that is. In the meantime Adam has got a touch under the collar, and who can blame him, at suggestions Shrimpers supremo Ron Martin made a couple of days ago that team and management were not putting in 100% towards the end of the last disastorous season. Though you couldn't blame one or two of them as they weren't getting paid, and certainly displays towards the end showed a squad whose morale was rock bottom, including the loan figure of Steve Tilson on the touchline who was now without his trusted lieutenant in Paul Brush as the Shrimpers ship sunk into the basement division. However, Adam will have none of it, and took the chance to give his view of events.Barrett told www.echo-news.co.uk: "I was captain of that team and everyone knows how much Southend meant to me, so there is no way I didn't try when I went out there. In fact, I think all of the lads and the management grafted and worked their socks off at all times in what were very difficult circumstances. There was a lot going on and Ron's entitled to his opinion, but I don't think anyone gave up. It was just unfortunate the way things worked out." Don't worry Adam, the true faithful know who to balme for what's happened at the club in recent seasons, but I do think it's safe to say it's doubtful ex-Captain Adam will return to Roots Hall in any capacity while Chairman Ron is in charge.Uncle Ron hits out:www.southendunited-mad.co.uk/news/tmnw/ron_martin_players_were_at_times_paid_late_but_players_should_continue_their_desire_to_win_667327/index.shtmlBarrett open talks with Dougie at the Palace:www.teamtalk.com/leyton-orient/6838021/Barrett-homes-in-on-Palace-talksThe Barrett Files Adam Barrett at Southend UnitedFull nameAdam Nicholas BarrettDate of birth29 November 1979 (1979-11-29) (age 31)Place of birthDagenham, London, EnglandHeight5 ft 10 in (1.78 m)Playing positionDefenderClub informationCurrent clubLeyton Orient (on loan from Crystal Palace)Number30Senior career*YearsTeamApps†(Gls)†1998-1999Leyton Orient0(0)1999-2000Plymouth Argyle52(3)2000-2002Mansfield Town37(1)2002-2004Bristol Rovers90(5)2004-2010Southend United247(27)2010-Crystal Palace7(0)2011-→ Leyton Orient (loan)9(0)* Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only and correct as of 12 April 2011.† Appearances (Goals).(Player info supplied by Wikipedia, for the full article go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Barrett)
