Top 10 Premier League Volleys: 3 - Matt Le Tissier

3) MATT LE TISSIER VS Newcastle United (Southampton 2-1 Newcastle United, October 24th 1993)

Matt Le Tissier had been dropped by manager Ian Branfoot for a lot of the start of the 1993-1994 Premier League campaign, and was playing a bit part in a team that had recorded just 1 win in their first 11 games.

Le Tissier, seen as a bit of a luxury player by the Southampton regime at the time, was brought back in to the side for the visit of Newcastle United and delivered an all conquering display. He scored his first of this 2-1 victory, which whilst it cannot be included in this list as it wasn’t technically a volley, is arguably one of the greatest ever premier league goals. With time running out in the same game Le Tissier hit the winner with a goal of equal class.

Midfielder Neil Maddison helped a poor clearance with his head onto Le Tissier who controlled the ball on his thigh and in one movement, lifted a perfectly controlled volley over Steve Harper with the ball nestling in the top right hand corner. Le Tissier’s two goals in this game would go on to win first and second prize in October’s goal of the month competition that season. Ian Branfoot would go on to be sacked shortly after and with Alan Ball coming in and building the team around Le Tissier, he would go onto enjoy his most successful spell in Southampton colours.
