Southampton transfer targets: Lucas Biglia, Joan Verdu, Fernandez and Davies
Southampton are eyeing up four potential signings to come in this January, as newly appointed manager Mauricio Ponchettino attempts to stamp his mark on the south coast club.
Anderlecht midfielder, Lucas Biglia is high on the agenda of several Premier league sides, Arsenal and Liverpool to name a few. But the Argentine is reportedly interested in a move to St Mary's and has even been on strike for the past week in hope that a move to England will come to fruition. Valued at £8,000,000 the playmaker will not come on the cheap but someone of his cailbre could make all the difference in Southampton's fight against relegation.
Another player that is said to have interested Pochettino is Espanyol's Spanish midfielder Joan Verdu. Verdu is a product of the well renowned Barcelona youth academy having spent eight years at the Catalonian side. Pochettino is said to be a huge admirer of the 29-year-old and having spent little over two years with him at Espanyol, he knows exactly what would be getting. With Southampton beginning to adjust to life in the Premier league, an experienced head is just what they need to see their run of two losses in their thirteen games built upon. Verdu is out of contract this summer so Pochettino may delay his move until the summer, but it could be all too late.
Staying in La Liga, Malaga striker Sebastian Fernandez has been linked with a rest-of-the-season loan move to the south coast. Pochettino is looking to bolster his striking options and sees the Uruguayan as the perfect fit. Fernandez has been less than prolific since joining from Argentine side Banfield in 2010, scoring 12 goals in 62 La Liga games which is just over one goal every five appearances.
Last on the Argentine managers list is Birmingham central defender Curtis Davies, who is apparently eager for a return to the English top flight. Reports suggest that Birmingham are expecting to receive around £1,500,000 for the former Aston Villa defender and for an experienced relegation fighter, this could turn out to be a crucial signing.
