Southampton will have to wait until next week to secure their top managerial target Nigel Adkins.

Saints have yet to agree a compensation package with Scunthorpe so the npower Championship club have confirmed Adkins will still be in charge of their match against Bristol City on Saturday.

A Scunthorpe statement read: "The situation involving the vacant manager's post at Southampton has yet to be resolved and as a result the management set-up which oversaw the 3-0 triumph over Crystal Palace a fortnight ago will remain as it was for the immediate future."

Adkins has held talks with Southampton but refuses to resign from Glanford Park in order to ensure the Iron are compensated.

The delay means Saints caretaker boss Dean Wilkins, who took over following Alan Pardew's dismissal last month, will be in charge of their League One trip to Swindon.
