Southampton 0-3 Swindon: Match report

31 August 2010 23:30

Swindon snatched the Johnstone's Paint Trophy away from holders Southampton in ruthless style in a Southern section first-round tie at St Mary's with a 3-0 win.

Swindon striker Vincent Pericard had the first and last word against a club for whom he played a solitary game during a 2008 loan spell from Stoke. Pericard stretched to volley Swindon into a first-half lead from striker partner Charlie Austin's cross. After enduring a spell of pressure Swindon broke devastatingly to gain the insurance of a second as Austin swept in Kevin Amankwaah's teasing cross.

Saints caretaker boss Dean Wilkins saw substitute Lee Barnard sent off within minutes of coming on and Pericard completed Southampton's night of misery by touching home the third from close range in injury time.

Blair Sturrock's sudden-death penalty sent Southend through to the second round at the expense of Gillingham.

Following a goalless 90 minutes, the match went to spot-kicks and the scores were level at 3-3 after both teams had a penalty saved and missed another.

The first of the sudden death penalties saw Jack Payne's effort saved by Blues goalkeeper Rhys Evans, before Sturrock, the son of manager Paul, fired into the right hand side of Lance Cronin's goal.

League Two leaders Torquay stormed into the second round after a bizarre 3-0 penalty shoot-out win over Bournemouth. The teams finished goalless after 90 minutes in which Bournemouth had been the dominant force.

But when it came to spot-kicks, Bournemouth endured a nightmare with Warren Cummings shooting a yard wide, Lee Bradbury hitting a post, and Marc Pugh having his shot saved. Torquay's penalty-takers, Chris Robertson, Nick Roe and Kevin Nicholson made no mistake.

Robbie Simpson was Brentford's match-winner as they proved too strong for Stevenage, winning 1-0.

Elsewhere, Aldershot secured a comfortable passage into the next round with a goal in each half as they beat Oxford 2-0 and Jamie Cureton scored his first two goals for Exeter to win a pulsating local derby as they beat Yeovil 3-1.
