Southampton chairman Michael Wilde has rubbished reports that teenage full-back Gareth Bale will be sold in the January transfer window.
Earlier in the week the Saints supremo warned manager George Burley that he would have to sell before he could add any new faces to the playing squad.
But Wilde has denied that the south coast club are looking to cash in on the £5million-rated Wales international.
"Stories we have to sell Gareth in order to buy players are simply not true," said Wilde.
"We're trying to build a team to get promoted and you don't do that by selling your best players.
"The January transfer window is an opportunity to improve the first-team squad."
