Saints target training ground upgrade
Saints undertook a comprehensive review of the facilities after Swiss billionaire Markus Liebherr took over during the summer, and have since applied to New Forest District Council to undertake a huge revamp of the training ground. They hope to hear a response by mid-February so they can start the redevelopment as part of the club's 125th anniversary celebrations in 2010. "Staplewood has received little investment in recent years yet professional football clubs rely increasingly on the quality of their training grounds to attract and retain high calibre staff," the club's planning document stated. "Whilst the pitches themselves are good, and regularly host highly competitive squad or reserve-team matches, the associated buildings are both basic, in terms of facilities, and unattractive. "And whilst St Mary's Stadium was built as the home of a Premiership club, Staplewood does not meet the same standard. As the home of the management, backroom staff and squad, Staplewood should be an inspiring, welcoming and well-resourced facility."
