Saints seal Thomas signing

Southampton have completed the signing of defender Wayne Thomas from Burnley for a fee in excess of £1million.

The 28-year-old centre-half has penned a three-year deal with the Saints and boss George Burley is pleased to have strengthened his defensive ranks.

He told the club's official website: "Wayne is an experienced defender who has played a lot of games for Stoke and Burnley over the last five or six years and he is a player I have admired for a long time.

"I tried to get him when I was at Derby, but just missed out because at the time we could not buy anyone.

"I was aware Wayne wanted a new challenge and I am delighted to have got him.

"Steve Cotterill was very reluctant to let him go and we had to pay a million, which is a lot of money."
