Saints pounce for Pearce

Struggling Southampton have snapped up Reading's teenage central defender Alex Pearce on loan until the beginning of January.

Saints boss Jan Poortvliet believes the 19-year-old, who has already made 12 first-team appearances for the Royals and spent time on loan at Northampton Town, Bournemouth, and Norwich City in the last 18 months, will be a useful addition to his squad.

Poortvliet said: "He looks good and has played some games for their first team this year and wants to play again.

"We always say that the goals we concede from set-pieces would have been avoided if we had somebody like him at the back and he is a good centre-half who is also aggressive."
