Southampton chairman Michael Wilde has warned manager George Burley that he will have to cut the size of the squad at St Mary's before he can bring in any new faces.
Burley has already drafted in a number of new players since arriving at the club in December last year including Grzegorz Rasiak, Inigo Idiakez and Rudi Skacel.
But before he can strengthen further Burley will first have to cut the size of the playing staff.
"I can't say what money would be made available," Wilde told the Southampton Daily Echo. "It might depend on us having to offload players before we can bring new ones in.
"George was given £7million last summer and if he wanted to bring in anyone else in January, we would look at the overall quality of the squad, and the financial position, before doing anything.
"It's not a case of George asking for some money and the board just writing out a cheque. It doesn't work like that."
