Saints exit for Woodward

Southampton have confirmed that Sir Clive Woodward has left his post as technical support director at St Mary's although he will continue in a 'consultancy' capacity.

The former England rugby union coach has been with the Saints for just over one year but his period with the club has been dogged by controversy.

A brief statement on the club's official website read: "Sir Clive Woodward today stepped down from his full-time role with Southampton Football Club but will continue to support the club in a consultancy capacity."

Woodward endured a difficult relationship with former boss Harry Redknapp and his position at the club was weakened when his appointment - head of sports science Simon Clifford left.

His position became virtually untenable when ex-chairman Rupert Lowe exited the Saints in June.
