Saints takeover pleases Benali

Markus Liebherr's takeover has ended a "frustrating time" for the club's fans, players and staff. And although Benali would have liked to have seen his friend Matt Le Tissier at the helm, he is happy the club can now move forward under the Swiss businessman. He said: "I have to say I'm pleased for the football club that something has been completed. "It has been going on for some time and it's good that the club can move forward. "Personally I would have liked my friend and team-mate Matt Le Tissier to have been successful with his bid. "But I hope now the new owner will be investing to take us forwards." Benali has only heard "little bits" about the club's new owner since hearing the news, but believes it is important he clarifies the position on staff soon, especially as some have been working without a contract. The future of manager Mark Wotte is one of those in doubt. The former Feyenoord technical director has worked unpaid since his contract ran out at the end of June and his future seems uncertain. "It's a difficult one, these have been very difficult circumstances," Benali said of Wotte's situation. "It's been a hard pre-season for him, in terms of preparation and losing players to other clubs." Benali also highlighted the importance of Southampton making new signings. And with the backing of Liebherr's personal wealth, estimated to be more than £2.5billion, he believes Saints can soon start climbing back up the leagues, despite starting this season with a 10-point deficit in League One. "Obviously Cristiano Ronaldo has moved to Real Madrid but there are still plenty of exciting players available," he joked. "Whoever the manager is I'm sure they'll have their own ideas about who they want to bring in. It's important that the club aim for promotion - whether it is automatically or through the play-offs. "I think it's possible to move up the divisions and back towards the Premier League. "Let's all hope we can get some success in the near future." Benali made 370 appearances for his hometown club after making his debut against Derby in 1988. During his 17 years at Southampton he scored just one goal, a header from a Le Tissier free-kick against Leicester in December 1997.
