Saints boss backs Lambert to excel

Lambert scored the first goal as a comprehensive 4-1 win over Gillingham put Southampton's points tally into the black - they now stand on two - for the first time this season.[LNB]Lambert, who has scored seven times since his arrival from Bristol Rovers in the second week of the season, was ultimately happy to play second fiddle to Adam Lallana, whose two goals effectively clinched Southampton's second win of the season.[LNB]Teenager Luke Rooney had levelled for a distinctly average Gillingham side midway through the first half before Ndiaye Papa Waigo put the hots 2-1 ahead.[LNB]Pardew said: "Rickie's fitness wasn't right when he joined us and he knows that. When he came here it was the first time he'd been with a club of Southampton's standing and previously hadn't been pushed nor had to push himself.[LNB]"But we've worked him hard in training and now he's become a better player every time he plays and the dividends are there to see."[LNB][LNB]
