Saints back on top after dramatic derby draw with Pompey

Southampton returned to the top of the Championship after being held to a dramatic 2-2 draw against local rivals Portsmouth on Saturday.

Nigel Adkins' side, who had surrendered pole position to Reading following their win over Leeds 24 hours earlier, were within seconds of claiming a crucial victory in the promotion race after Billy Sharp's 89th minute strike.

But David Norris bagged a stoppage-time equaliser for Portsmouth to leave Southampton ahead of Reading on goal difference and four points clear of third placed West Ham.

Southampton had opened the scoring in the south-coast derby through Sharp's 27th minute, but Chris Maguire's rasping effort levelled for Portsmouth nine minutes later.

A fine display from Pompey goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown seemed to have secured the visitors a point until former Doncaster striker Sharp put Southampton back in front when his close-range effort, originally ruled out for offside, was given as a goal.

However, midfielder Norris struck deep into stoppage-time to stun the majority of the 31,743 crowd and keep alive second bottom Portsmouth's hopes of avoiding relegation.
