Poortvliet hails Saints squad

Southampton head coach Jan Poortvliet hailed his youthful side after they secured a morale-boosting 3-2 victory at Preston North End.

The Saints came from two goals down to steal the three points at Deepdale, with David McGoldrick netting the winner in stoppage time.

Poortvliet told the club's official website: "I have no words for it because it was so emotional and because I love to win for the fans.

"They have had a hard time recently and also with what happened last season, because it's difficult to believe in something, in what we're doing because they just see young boys.

"It proves you can do it with young boys. We need some experienced players as well, but we know that on this occasion we had young boys and in the end they deserved it.

"You could see they were so happy with the end result."
