Pochettino offered Benfica job

Mauricio Pochettino has been offered the manager's job at Portuguese giants Benfica, according to reports.

It would seem highly unlikely that the Saints boss would walk out of St Mary’s after stating so publically his desire to continue to work alongside Nicola Cortese only a fortnight ago, but Spanish daily newspaper El Confidencial has reported the job offer as fact.

Even if the report is correct, and even if Pochettino was interested, Saints would need to agree to let him go, and as he is under contract that would also mean compensation being agreed.

Cortese has proved himself to be a very tough negotiator and would be very reluctant to let his man leave.

The pair have formed a close bond since Pochettino took over from Nigel Adkins in January, and they are plotting a stellar season at Saints next time out where they are targeting a European place.

Though Benfica can offer a decent chance of domestic silverware, and Champions League football, Saints still boast the Premier League and the millions the Liebherr family are pumping in for summer spending.

Many would therefore suggest that he would be better off staying at Saints anyway.
