The 2-0 win over Yeovil meant the Saints remained bottom of the league on minus two points, having started the season with a 10-point deduction.
Pardew arrived at the club late in pre-season and hopes that his side can push on after a slow start to the campaign.
"Coming to the club missing, I would say, two thirds of pre-season we missed most of the free transfers," Pardew told a fans forum on Monday night.
"Initially I felt we needed some time, and I'm not trying to tread water, but to find out who we are and how good we are.
"I think the building blocks are slowly going in and it was a very important win on Saturday, and we had made progress in previous games without securing a win."
