Manchester United Could Switch Attention To Saints Fullback Shaw

Manchester United could switch their attention to the young Southampton full back Luke Shaw after being rebuffed in their attempts to sign Leighton Baines according to the Telegraph.

Manchester United are yet to acquire a big name signing so far this season but that looked to change this week after a £28million double bid for Everton's Marouanne Fellaini and Leighton Baines was lodged. However, the bid was deemed 'derisory' by Everton chiefs and Manchester United were rebuffed in their attempts.

The Telegraph are reporting that they could instead move for the prospective future England international Luke Shaw. Shaw enjoyed a fantastic debut season in the premier league last season making 25 league appearances and holding down a first team spot.

A stumbling block for the Manchester giants could be that Shaw signed a new 5 year contract this very summer. As a result, if they are to pry the young star away from the Saints then it would take a generous bid. The upside of any such deal however would be the fact that Shaw would still more than likely be cheaper than any deal for Baines. Add to that the fact that Shaw is only 18, he has a long and potentially prosperous career ahead of him. With Patrice Evra still performing at a high level regularly, many would argue that a move for a left back is not urgent, but the signing of Shaw would go some way to appease fans who are desperate for a signing this summer.

It would be no surprise if Southampton were extremely unwilling to sell the player, especially as he has only recently signed the new contract extension. In recent years southampton have sold fantastic talents such as Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale and Alex Oxelade-Chamberlain. Southampton have invested heavily this summer with the acquisitions of Pablo Osvaldo, Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama and will be hoping this is neough to persuade the young star to stay at the club for at least the time being.
