Lancashire earns boss' praise
23 Oct 2008 - 07:06:43
Southampton youngster Oliver Lancashire has been backed by head coach Jan Poortvliet despite being sent off in the goalless draw with Sheffield United.
The 19-year-old was dismissed in the closing stages of the game for a second bookable offence as the Saints secured a point that keeps them out of the relegation zone.
"I think Olly won us a point because he sacrificed himself for the team," said Poortvliet.
"He could have let the player go but Danny Webber probably would have scored, so he did a great job. We will miss him on Saturday as he had an outstanding game.
"In the first half we played very well and got some chances to score and gave nothing away, but the second half was another game, a difficult game, and we didn't play our football like in the first half because we couldn't any more.
"I have to compliment Sheffield United for the second half and for my boys because they worked very hard for the result and in the end we deserved it.
"A 0-0 draw here looks good and we are happy and looking forward to Saturday's game."
