John set for Southampton offer
The Trinidad & Tobago international, who spent last season on loan at Bristol City, is a free agent after his previous Saints deal ran out at the end of June.
But he is still training with the south-coast club and played in Tuesday night's 5-4 friendly defeat against Salisbury.
"Stern played and as the game wore on he got more and more into it and more effective. He is not fit but I am trying to do a contract for him," Pardew told the Echo.
"I think it would be good for Southampton, I think it would be good for me and for the club. He has made it quite clear he wants to stay and I'm pleased about that because I think he'll be important for us.
"His strength and his ability if you look at his goals to games ratio all suggest he will get goals in this division and I certainly think that."
