Connolly, 32, opened the scoring in Saturday's 3-1 win at the Bank's Stadium and laid on the other two goals for Dean Hammond and strike partner Rickie Lambert as Saints continued their surge up the table.

Manager Alan Pardew branded Connolly "the best player on the pitch by a country mile" and young Welshman James agreed.

"He was different class, he scored a brilliant goal," said James.

"Connolly and Rickie Lambert will always get you goals.

"He's a fantastic role model. He's always giving us advice and passing on his vast experience."
