Holmes has yet to make an appearance this season due to ankle and groin problems, but he played for the reserves in midweek and has told Alan Pardew he will be available to face his manager's old club if needed.
"I am still not back to what is my peak but I am by no means far off which is nice," he said.
"I would like to do as much as I can in training and see where it leaves me. I feel pretty good and in the coming weeks I would love to start pushing for a place.
"I would play whenever the gaffer wanted me to. That's the kind of player I am - whether I am 100% fit or 50% fit.
"But that's the gaffer's choice and if he thinks I need a few more games then I will take the games on and try to do as much as I can in them."
