Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis has apologised for gesturing to the crowd during last weekend's 5-0 thrashing at Sheffield Wednesday.
Saints claim some supporters from both clubs complained following the second-half 'fist-shaking' incident and Davis has now issued an apology.
"I apologise to both sets of supporters for my reaction and in particular to anyone offended by it," he told the club's official wenbite.
"It was unprofessional of me to react like that, but it was something which happened in the heat of the moment and which I now regret.
"It was purely and simply down to the fact that I was angry and frustrated at being 5-0 down. That really hurt because I love being at the club and I desperately want us to do well.
"I work extremely hard and like any professional I am sensitive if people don't think I care. I care passionately and maybe that spilled over.
"It is not something I have ever done before or intend to do again. I can understand the fans being upset at the scoreline but I can assure them that no-one was more hurt than I was."
