Davis eyes strong start

Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis is relishing the start of the new season and hopes his side can get off to a positive start against Plymouth on August 7. Argyle, who were relegated from the Championship last term, will travel to St Mary's on the opening day of the season before Saints face a mouthwatering south-coast derby clash at home to Bournemouth in the first round of the Carling Cup. Davis told the club's official website: "For us it's very nice to have a home game to start on, but the only problem with that is that it becomes a must-win. "You really want to get off to a good start so the fact that it's at home and against Plymouth, who have just come down from the Championship and will fancy their chances, means that it's an opportunity to hit the ground running this season." On the clash with rivals Bournemouth, he added: "It's another fantastic tie and being at home gives us a slight advantage. "The early stages of the cup give the manager an opportunity to sort his team out and I think it'll be a tasty tie against Bournemouth."
