Boruc says threw water bottle after crowd taunts

Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc said that "racist" taunts from Tottenham fans led him to throw a water bottle their way in October.

"I beat myself up over it, because I gave (Southampton manager Nigel) Adkins a real reason to bench me," the 33-year-old Poland international said in an interview with Polish daily Rzeczpospolita.

"But I won't say I regret it, because I heard words addressed to me from the stands that were unpleasant, racist," the former Celtic number one added in the interview published Thursday, without specifying exactly what the fans said.

The incident occurred after the north London club scored their second goal in a 2-1 win against Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on October 28.

Adkins benched Boruc afterwards and he only returned to the pitch in January.

"But I like challenges like that. It's nice to hit rock bottom, because then you can bounce back," he told the newspaper.
