Baird asks to leave Saints

Southampton defender Chris Baird has handed in a transfer request amid speculation that he is wanted by Fulham.

Fulham boss Lawrie Sanchez reportedly tabled a £2.5million bid for the Northern Ireland international last week which was turned down by the Saints.

But the 25-year-old is believed to be unhappy with the Championship club's stance and has asked to leave St Mary's.

A statement on Southampton's official website read: "We received a transfer request from Chris Baird late yesterday. There is no further comment at this stage."

Saints have already sold teenage full-back Gareth Bale to Tottenham for an initial £5million since the end of the last campaign.
