Southampton's promising young left-back Gareth Bale has been named as the Championship's Player of the Month for August.

The 17-year-old Welshman netted superb free-kicks in the opening two games of the season and was linked with a move to the Premiership before the transfer window shut at the end of last week.

Chairman of the awards panel, Chris Kamara, commented: "Gareth Bale is an outstanding young talent who has made an amazing contribution to Southampton this month.

"He has a good understanding of the game for someone so young and as we have already seen from his goals he possesses a terrific left foot.

"I know manager George Burley rates him very highly and he is definitely a player to look out for this season."
