Armed police in crime crackdown

Police in Southampton - some armed - have stopped 60 people as part of an initiative to crack down on crime.Operation Spartan is part of continuing police work to tackle drugs, drug suppliers and drug-related violent crime in the city. [LNB]Nine people were arrested, one on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, two for suspected kidnap, robbery and assault and six for drug offences. [LNB]Police also carried out more then 30 searches of people and seized two cars. [LNB]'Even safer'[LNB]More than 70 officers were involved. [LNB]Ch Insp Andy Bottomley said: "We are very pleased with the operation. [LNB]"We stopped a lot of people we suspected of criminal activity and we made some good arrests and seizures. [LNB]"This work will help to make the city an even safer place for people to live and work." [LNB]More Operation Spartan events are planned in the city in future weeks.
