Adkins: We were the better team

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins felt his side deserved to take all three points from their goalless draw at home to leaders Brighton.

It was a hard-fought encounter throughout, but Brighton spurned a golden chance to snatch all three points after 66 minutes. Ryan Dickson was adjudged to have fouled Glenn Murray in the Saints area, but West Brom loanee Chris Wood saw his well-struck penalty saved by Kelvin Davis.

"Kelvin has saved the penalty but we have dominated the game. We have been on the front foot throughout and we played on our terms and didn`t let them settle, which is credit to my team," said Adkins.

"Defensively we were well set up and we created opportunities. I thought our first-half performance was good, we played at a high tempo and passed it well - we just lacked a goal.

"We have played the team who are at the top of the division at the minute and we were the better side. If we get our performances to that standard consistently, we will win games.

"We have been positive and asserted ourselves. We've made them play the game on our terms, which was important."
