A well-deserved victory - Adkins

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins was full of praise for his team after they secured a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. Lee Barnard handed Adkins his first win as Saints manager after latching on to a pass from strike partner Rickie Lambert and slotting home in the 61st minute. Adkins said: "I'm very pleased to get a victory at Hillsborough. It was a game between two teams that I expect to be at the top of the table by the end of the season so to come away from home and get a victory we are obviously delighted. "To keep a second clean sheet is important and to score a goal is excellent especially when we haven't managed to do that for a couple of weeks. It's a well-deserved victory in my eyes but we need to build on it. "We have got a very hard-working honest group of professional football players who all want to do well and now we've scored a goal and got a victory there is a lot more belief that we can do what we set out to do. "I thought we had great support from the fans who had travelled up from Southampton. I don't know what it was probably, around 1,200, and it's great to be able to share a win with them which is why we celebrated as we did at the full-time whistle."
