Former Yugoslavian international Srecko Katanec has been named coach of the Slovenian national team for the second time, the country's football association said Wednesday.

The former VfB Stuttgart and Sampdoria defender, 49, will be officially appointed on Friday.

Slovenia parted company with previous coach Slavisa Stojanovic in December amid a disappointing qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil which left them one place from bottom in Group E.

Katanec previously coached Slovenia between 1998 and 2002, taking the former Yugoslav republic to the final stages of the 2000 European Championship and the 2002 World Cup.

Katanec, who played 31 times for Yugoslavia and five times for Slovenia after independence, has also coached Olympiakos and the Macedonian and the United Arab Emirates national sides.
